A new film series organized by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in partnership with the UCLA American Indian Studies Center will bring the vibrant work of emerging Native filmmakers to audiences across the country at a time when Indigenous filmmaking is on the rise.
“Imagining Indigenous Cinema: New Voices, New Visions,” opening in June 2023, will illuminate Native filmmakers’ path-breaking work. The nine-night series will feature short-form, mid-length and feature-length films produced since 2014 that exemplify innovative approaches to cinematic visual and narrative forms.
Presented in person at and livestreamed from the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum, the series will feature discussions with filmmakers, scholars and writers from local tribes and communities. Selected films will also screen at the Vidiots Foundation’s soon-to-open Eagle Theatre.
“The series will bring together artists, academics and audiences around the power of Native American storytelling through moving images,” said May Hong HaDuong, Archive director. “Intentionality and inclusivity are important to the Archive, and we strive to engage with communities and audiences that reflect the rich macrocosm of UCLA and Los Angeles.”
The Center will help guide the project throughout the entire process.
“We look forward to serving a key role in the success of the series,” said Shannon Speed, Center director, professor of gender studies and anthropology, and a member of the Chickasaw Nation. “Centering indigenous voices and scholarship is at the core of our mission. Working collaboratively, we will serve an audience ready and enthusiastic for more indigenous voices in this contemporary media landscape.”
