We asked him a few questions about his new role:
What goals do you have for this year as our new librarian for geography, maps and economics?
In my first year, my primary goal is to establish strong and positive working relationships with my colleagues across the UCLA Library system in order to establish a solid foundation for my future in this role. There are people working here in the Library with a wide array of backgrounds and experiences, and I know I have so much to learn from them. I want to learn who I can collaborate with not only within my department, but across the entire library system for instruction, reference, outreach and other work.
How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at UCLA Library?
I am thankful that I worked at UCLA Library as a graduate student while I completed my Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree at the UCLA Ed&IS Department of Information Studies. For two years I was a Library Student Research Assistant (LSRA) in the Charles E. Young Research Library where I conducted research consultations and taught workshops. Prior to becoming a LSRA, I worked in Library Special Collections as a Processing and Outreach Scholar for a year. In those roles, I was able to learn so much about how UCLA Library operates, its mission and goals, while also having the opportunity to meet so many of my now-colleagues in the Library.
What projects will you be tackling first?
One project I’ll be tackling first is getting to know UCLA's geography and economics departments. I want to learn more from the faculty, staff and students about what type of research they’re working on and what their needs are from the Library in order to best provide support to them. The other key project that I’ll be working on is learning more about what exactly is in our (very extensive) map collections. I want to develop a deeper understanding of our map holdings so that I can best provide research support to our library users.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I have a passion for film, and am always looking for new things to expand my horizons. I have a particular passion for both queer cinema and documentaries. A few recommendations I have are Shinjuku Boys (1995), The Watermelon Woman (1996), Tongues Untied (1989), and O Happy Day: The Early Days of Black Gay Liberation (1996). All of these films are available for free through the UCLA Library’s subscription to Kanopy!

My name is Maggie Tarmey and I use he/they pronouns.
