More Information

Dear Friends of UCLA Library,

Since returning to UCLA as the Norman and Armena Powell University Librarian in March, this Fall Quarter will mark my first full academic year leading the Library. The rhythm of this new academic year is resonating as thousands of UCLA students are filling our libraries, seeking our expertise and resources, gathering in group study rooms, and exploring Library collections.

Our libraries are critical places on campus and online, where teaching, learning and research blend seamlessly in pursuit of Bruin excellence. Our Library team provides connections to our collections thoughtfully and in a variety of ways, knowing that the manuscript that inspires a dissertation breakthrough will also situate the past into a present context for undergraduates having their first interaction with a primary source from another era. We design our services and tools to help students excel, be that in the classroom, the lab or the studio.

Last year alone, Library experts fielded more than 21,000 reference inquiries in person and online, and our librarians and staff conducted more than 1,000 presentations, including course-related instruction, workshops and outreach events, reaching over 38,000 students. Many live sessions are recorded and made available asynchronously, alongside other online workshops and tutorials, enabling the Library to scale these resources for instant access by more than 46,000 UCLA students.

Other tools and resources, such as hundreds of online subject research guides and digital collections, put the Library at the fingertips of the Bruin community around the clock.

Our work is amplified through partnerships fostered within our Bruin community that harness the collective expertise and commitment of campus leaders, faculty, staff, community members and you, our cherished donors. Thank you. Your support enables the Library to accelerate our students’ pursuit of their dreams, to publish scholarly work, to make groundbreaking discoveries, and, ultimately, to become critical thinkers and life-long learners who are informed members of a global society.

With warm regards,

Athena N. Jackson
