About the Program

The UCLA Library Books Open Access (BOA) Pilot Program, made possible by support from the Arcadia Fund, aims to:

  • Restore copyright: Negotiating and returning copyright ownership to UCLA
    faculty for selected monograph publications.
  • Preserve and share knowledge: Depositing faculty publications in the UC eScholarship(opens in a new tab) repository, ensuring long-term digital preservation and global access.

By leveraging Creative Commons licenses, the program supports unrestricted access to faculty work, making it discoverable and reusable by scholars worldwide.

Why Participate?

Faculty members benefit from:

  • Control over their work: With copyright returned, scholars can use their research freely.
  • Increased visibility: Publications in the eScholarship Repository receive wider exposure and citation opportunities, even for works originally published in print.
  • Long-term preservation: Ensuring the availability of their academic contributions
    for future generations.

How it Works

  1. Negotiation: The Library negotiates with publishers to secure the return of rights.
  2. Repository deposit: Faculty works are subsequently uploaded to the eScholarship Repository under an open license.
  3. Monitoring impact: The program tracks citation metrics to measure the impact of increased accessibility.

Participation Criteria

  • Eligible publications: Monograph works previously published by UCLA faculty.
  • Open licensing: Publications will be released under a Creative Commons license.
  • Publisher engagement: The Library will approach publishers first on behalf of participating authors to negotiate rights.

Next Steps and Future Plans

The Library will continuously expand the list of eligible publications and refine the program's
workflow to ensure smooth implementation. Additionally, it will explore the possibility of multi-
language rights for works originally published in different languages.

The pilot phase will assess the program's success using a cost-benefit framework to determine
its long-term feasibility.
