About the Collection
Gertrude Stein was an influential 20th-century writer, cultural figure, art collector and philanthropist. Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1874 and raised in California, Stein eventually settled in Paris in 1903, where she met her life partner and creative collaborator Alice B. Toklas. Throughout her life, Stein maintained a vibrant social network with artists, writers and thinkers around the world. One of her correspondents was Gilbert A. Harris, UCLA alumnus and former editor-in-chief of The New Republic magazine. They became acquainted in 1933 and continued to correspond with each other until Stein’s death in 1946. Harrison diligently kept a record of his correspondences with Stein and Toklas and additionally collected other materials related to Stein including news articles, photographs, artworks and works of writing. He donated his collection related to Stein to UCLA Library in 1973 and continued to build it until 1988.
