During a press conference at the Los Angeles Press Club, a young community representative states that Chinatown residents have documented numerous incidents of officers making racist remarks and threatening people. The representative further asserts that police have violated the civil rights of community members with illegal searches. He points out that the effect of the police behavior has been to increase hatred of the police department, not only amongst gang members, but among many youths who normally would respect the police. Additionally, he raises concerns about the conditions facing the youth in Chinatown, including lack of jobs, lack of English instruction and inadequate recreational facilities. A different young man states his concern about the biased presentation in the media of the incidents taking place in Chinatown, and also objects to the methods being used by the police. Acting LAPD Chief Daryl Gates responds, stating specific complaints would be investigated, but that the task force assigned to Chinatown was formed very carefully. Gates also states that he does not believe the allegations. Clip includes shots of Chinatown. The meeting focused on the deaths of two men, Reyes Martinez, who died of head injuries after being taken into police custody, and Abel Gill, who was shot by a deputy sheriff after reportedly trying to ram a patrol car. In this clip, reporter Stan Chambers covers a demonstration in front of the Criminal Courts Building to protest against the deaths of Gill and Martinez. Following the meeting at the DA's office, 200 demonstrators marched from the Criminal Courts Building to a nearby park. Miguel Garcia addresses the crowd stating that it's the community's responsibility to organize and keep pressure on the agencies in the criminal justice system. He also expresses his frustration that no action has been taken yet in other cases where people have died, such as the shooting of Eula Love. Garcia states that he sees the investigations into the deaths of Reyes Martinez and Abel Gill as a test of new people in the DA's office (Johnnie Cochran and Gil Garcetti) and that the cases are prosecutable for murder or manslaughter. Four days later, 12 incarcerees arguing for better conditions, including more time outside of jail cells, and an end to undue visitor mail delays, went on a hunger strike. In this clip, reporter Tony Valdez covers a protest in which demonstrators carry signs in support of those on the hunger strike, and denouncing the conditions in the prison. Valdez interviews a man who talks about the incident and the injuries, as well as conditions in the county jail that violate the constitutional rights of the incarcerees as litigated by the ACLU in a federal civil rights class action suit.
