Ann Scott Longueil Fund for Literature

Alfred E. Longueil became the first chairman of UCLA's English Department in 1936 and continued to teach in the department until 1966. A specialist in romantic poetry and the history of literary criticism, Professor Longueil also shaped university policies for more than a quarter of a century. Among the numerous university committees he chaired were those on academic freedom, tenure and curriculum. Professor Longueil's passion for literature lives on at the Charles E. Young Research Library, thanks to his bequest that established the Ann Scott Longueil Fund for Literature for the acquisition of books in the fields of English, American and classic Latin literature. Professor Longueil left his book collection to the UCLA Library and the English Reading Room, and he also bequeathed scholarship funds to UCLA in the name of his wife, Deborah King Longueil.
