George Ross Robertson Chemistry Library Fund

George Ross Robertson, better known to his colleagues as Robbie, was born in Toronto, Canada, but spent most of his youth in Southern California. He received his bachelor's degree from Pomona College in life science in 1909. He went on to earn a master's degree in agriculture from UC Berkeley, and after teaching high school science for seven years, he earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago. Professor Robertson was among the early members of the chemistry faculty at UCLA. Although he valued fundamental research, teaching students was his favorite activity. Professor Robertson designed and supervised the construction of the William G. Young Hall of Chemistry at UCLA and became a recognized expert on the design of chemical laboratories. Professor Robertson died in 1972, leaving a bequest to the UCLA Library to establish the George Ross Robertson Chemistry Library Fund for the purchase of books for the Chemistry Library, which later became part of the Science and Engineering Library.
