Joan S. and Ralph N. Goldwyn Endowed Collection in Jazz
As fans of jazz music, Joan S. and Ralph N. Goldwyn established this endowment to give back to the university in a way that reflected their passion.
A UCLA graduate with a degree in business administration, Ralph Goldwyn was president of First Commercial Finance Corporation and a member of the UCLA Board of Governors. Over the years Mr. and Mrs. Goldwyn have demonstrated their affection for UCLA through generous philanthropy and personal involvement in programs across campus. Avid jazz fans, they decided to establish a collection endowment to help build the jazz collections in the Music Library into the foremost collection in the western United States. The bookplate for this endowment shows an image of a reed instrument in honor of Mrs. Goldwyn's father, who had a prominent music business in Los Angeles. The Music Library is actively developing its jazz archival collections in cooperation with internationally renowned jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, director of the jazz program in the departments of music and ethnomusicology. The Joan S. and Ralph N. Goldwyn Endowed Collection in Jazz supports acquisition, preservation and access to primary resources, sound recordings, journals, discographies, historical and theoretical studies, oral histories, and other essential jazz materials.
