Schander Family Endowment for Research in the International Diaspora in China
The Schander Family Endowment for Research in the International Diaspora in China was created by a UCLA alumna and friends to complement the East Asian Library collection.
This endowment supports the acquisition, processing and preservation of resources on the international diaspora in China in the early to mid-20th century. It is the companion to the Edwin Schander Family Papers that provide research material on Volga German and Russian immigrants living in Harbin, China. Edwin Schander graduated with a Masters in Library Science degree from UCLA. He was a reference librarian for over three decades for the Los Angeles County Law Library from which he retired as head of Reference Services. His credo as a reference librarian was summarized in a quotation from Samuel Johnson, “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.”
