Patricia R. Boyle established The Ira L. Boyle Endowment for Actuarial Science and Mathematics in memory of her late husband, Ira. Mr. Boyle graduated from UCLA Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude in 1972 with a degree in mathematics. He pursued actuarial science professionally at Transamerica Life Companies and became a fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1976. As actuarial director at Transamerica, Mr. Boyle helped initiate an actuarial studies program in the UCLA Department of Mathematics. Transamerica and the department of mathematics continue to work together to further this program.
Mrs. Boyle, herself a UCLA graduate, decided that her husband's fondness for Winnie-the-Pooh should be commemorated in the bookplate that will be affixed to library materials acquired with the endowment funds. The Trustees of the Pooh Properties agreed and gave permission to use the E.H. Shepard illustration. Income from the endowment is being used to purchase books, periodicals and other resources in actuarial studies and related areas in applied mathematics for the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Collection of the Science and Engineering Library.
