The She-Wo Cheng Memorial Fund
This endowment honors She-Wo Cheng, a trailblazer for journalism in China and Taiwan, by acquiring East Asian journalism materials for the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library.
The She-Wo Cheng Memorial Fund was established by UCLA Sociology Professor Lucie Cheng, Chia-lin Cheng, Si-Wei Cheng and You-shu Cheng in honor of the centennial of the birth of their father. She-Wo Cheng was born in Nanking, China, in 1898 and graduated from Peking University in 1921. He founded the Shih Chieh Daily and, overcoming many challenges, went on to found several other newspapers in China. In 1948 he was elected a legislator of the Republic of China. The Communist takeover of China in 1949 led to a shutdown of Mr. Cheng's newspapers, an act that he protested vigorously. In 1952 he moved his family to Taiwan. With the government's ban on newspapers at that time, he decided to found a school of journalism. In 1956 he founded the Shih-Chieh Vocational School of Journalism in Taipei, which became Shih Hsin University. In 1988, when the ban on newspapers was lifted, Mr. Cheng founded Taiwan Lih-Pao Daily at the age of 91 and continued his remarkable career until shortly before his death in 1991. The She-Wo Cheng Memorial Fund in the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library will be used to support the acquisition and processing of Chinese-, Japanese- and Korean-language materials in journalism and education.
