John P.A Ioannidis, MD, DSc; Professor of Medicine, of Epidemiology and Population Health, and (by courtesy) of Biomedical Data Science, and of Statistics and Co-Director, Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS), Stanford University

This talk will explore the interface between evidence and policy and how reproducible, transparent research practices and a focus on promoting the conduct of reliable useful research can affect this interface. Evidence-based approaches and evidence synthesis have made major progress in enhancing our understanding of both the strengths and weaknesses of scientific investigation. The quest for reproducible and transparent science has also led to substantial improvements in many scientific fields, but much is still desirable to achieve on these frontiers. Most applied research efforts, moreover, do not fulfill features that would make them useful. There is both theoretical concern and empirical evidence that a lot of research efforts are wasted.

Science is the best thing that can happen to humans, and investment in research needs to be expanded and strengthened. However, we need to enhance the efficiency and reliability of research practices. Aligning the reward system with best science may also make a difference.

This presentation will be conducted in person and via Zoom. RSVP is requested.

Light refreshments will be served.
